Let me make this simple for you if US dollars does not exactly mean anything to you. US$217 is GBP£138. Why should each and every Zimbabwean know these figures? Astonishingly everyone, this is all that is left of our public funds. Who revealed this to the world? Finance Minister Tendai Biti.

I have never been so amazed….how have we survived? In the state media you hear things like, “we are experiencing a slow recovery..” That does not sound like a recovery to me.

Like everyone else all I am thinking is what happened to the $685m revenue made from diamond sales? According to the Guardian; ‘the government paid public servants and this all that is left.’ So they spent all US$685m on public servants???? Really?! I don’t think even USA has that sort of public servant salary allocation.

See for yourself:

“Last week when we paid civil servants there was $217 [left] in government coffers,” Tendai Biti, the finance minster, told journalists in the capital, Harare, on Tuesday, noting that some of them have healthier bank balances than the state. “The government finances are in a paralysis state at the present moment. We are failing to meet our targets.”

Zimbabwe’s elections agency has said it needs $104m to organise polls this year. Biti added: “The government has no money for elections … We will be approaching the international community to assist us in this regard, but it’s important that government should also do something.”

Now my question is simple….how are we going to fund the impending elections? Will the international community say yes and if so will this finally lead to a regime change in Zimbabwe? If like me, you have spent most of your life on the sidelines, this is the time to make a choice, to make a stand. Choose which side you are on my friends.
